At MaxOhr Technologies, innovation is not always about creating something entirely new — sometimes, it is about reimagining what already exists and unlocking new possibilities from it.
A while ago, I was gifted a Corsair HS60 wired gaming headset. While the headset already delivered impressive sound quality and comfort, I saw an opportunity to explore how far the hardware could be pushed beyond its original design.
Rather than leaving it as a standard wired headset, I decided to take on a personal engineering challenge:
Convert the Corsair HS60 into a rechargeable dual-mode wireless headset.
The Vision Behind the Refabrication
Wired headsets are reliable, but they can sometimes limit mobility and convenience, especially in environments where flexibility and portability matter. My goal was not simply to remove the wire, but to redesign the headset into a smarter, more adaptable device while preserving its original strengths.
The vision was clear:
- Maintain the excellent audio quality
- Preserve the original aesthetic design
- Add wireless Bluetooth functionality
- Integrate rechargeable power management
- Improve portability and convenience
- Retain compatibility with wired usage
The Engineering Process
The project involved carefully redesigning the headset’s internal configuration to accommodate entirely new hardware components without compromising performance and the original design.
Using my own tools, components, and engineering approach, I integrated:
- Bluetooth audio circuitry
- Rechargeable lithium-ion battery system
- USB Type-C charging module
- Internal power management system
- Mini audio amplifier stage
- Noise-handling circuitry
- Wireless audio transmission setup
- Dual microphone support
One of the major focuses during the process was ensuring clean internal integration while retaining comfort, durability, and audio stability.
What Changed
The refabricated Corsair HS60 is now:
- A dual-mode headset (wired + Bluetooth v5.0)
- Powered by a 3.7V 800mAh Li-ion battery
- Capable of approximately 20–24 hours estimated runtime
- Supporting up to 10 meters (≈33 ft) Bluetooth range
- Equipped with a USB Type-C charging port
- Capable of both stereo and mono (single-ear) operation
- Integrated with onboard media and call controls
Integrated Controls
The headset now supports:
- Play/Pause
- Next/Previous track
- Volume Up/Down
- Call answering
- Call termination
Dual Microphone System
To preserve versatility, the headset features:
- An internal microphone for wireless mode
- The original Corsair detachable external microphone retained for wired mode
Improved Audio Performance
One particularly satisfying outcome of the project was the sound performance.
The audio quality not only matched the original wired version — it actually improved. By strategically integrating a mini amplifier and noise-handling stage alongside the Bluetooth driver, the headset delivers:
- Cleaner audio output
- Fuller bass response
- Better sound balance
- Enhanced listening experience overall
More Than a Modification
This project was more than a simple hardware modification — it was a demonstration of practical innovation, adaptive engineering, and creative problem-solving.
